How To Wear A Corset On Your Own; Step-by-Step Guide

Loosen the corset;
1.)    Roughly close the lacings at the back.

2.)    Wrap the corset around you to estimate the gap between the openings.

3.)    Expand the lacings at the back to stretch and cover the gap.

Closing the busk;
1.)    Hold the busk boning for better grip and easier manipulation. Hold the button side inwards, and the hook side outwards.
2.)    Fasten busk starting from the middle. Hook in sequence, going down. Fasten the top busk last.

Tightening the corset; (hint: works like a shoelace)
1.)    Lightly tug on the corset to adjust the height.

2.)    If the ribbons tie at the top, pull both ribbons outwards or upwards to tighten overall. Keep a strong grip on the ribbons, and pull at the Xs to tighten more. Tie a simple butterfly knot to secure the lacing.

3.)    If the ribbons tie in the middle, pull sideways to tighten overall. Pull top ribbons downwards to tighten the top, and bottom ribbons upwards to tighten the bottom. Pull on the Xs to tighten specific areas.

For normal fittings, it is not necessary to readjust the corset every time while wearing.
For tight-lacing and waist-training, loosen and readjust for every wear.

Fastening the hook-eye/clasps;
1.)    Start at the bottom, hooking one by one till the top.

Corsets can be worn over or under clothes. A plain corset without trimmings is not visible under most clothes.

M: The Corset Diet

Some of you may have heard about dieting using corsets. It has been rather popular with international celebrities, and a favorite target for critics.

The Corset Diet is basically about using corsets to restrict your food intake, leading to weight loss.

By lacing up the wearer to a certain tightness, the corset will compress the lower torso, reducing the abdominal cavity. In turn, the expansion of the stomach will be limited when eating.

Which in layman terms, means; "the corset will squeeze your tummy so you cannot eat as much."

Simply, it reduces the food intake, thus lowering the amount of calories you consume.

However, critics like to argue that it is not very effective. The wearer can always defy this diet by loosening the corset before meals, or eating higher caloric foods.

Well, if you don't have the discipline to stick to this diet, you probably don't have the discipline to do any other diet either. Its the same determination and motivation you need for any diet plan.

Some advice I can give would be to:

1.) Never overeat. Do not force yourself to finish your food.
     - The amount you can comfortably stomach will be drastically reduced, so avoid swallowing more than what your new tiny stomach can handle, or it may result in discomfort.
     - Overeating in a corset may result in nausea and heartburn.
     - You can separate one normal meal into 2 or 3 smaller meals.

2.) Eat slowly. It can be hard to gauge the amount you can stomach at first for certain foods.

3.) NEVER suddenly loosen your corset after eating a lot.
     - This will cause a sudden change in stomach pressure, which is not only very uncomfortable, but also not good for your stomach elasticity.

4.) Try to avoid high caloric/high fat foods.
     - 1 gram of fat is 9 calories, as compared to 1 gram of protein at 4 calories.
     - If I eat 100 grams of mayonnaise, I will still get fat, as compared to if I had 2kg of greens.
     - Please do not eat fried chicken everyday while on the corset diet and then complain to us that it isn't helping your weight or body shape.

6.) Please exercise.
    - A little bit of exercise everyday can help to boost your metabolism and burn off the calories that you consumed easier.
    - A diet always works better in synergy with exercise.

If you really want to have a heavy meal while wearing a corset, please loosen it BEFORE eating.

The corset diet not only reduces the amount of food intake, but also prolongs the feeling of fullness.

I did not intentionally start the corset diet. So the first time I had one of our former colleagues fit me in a corset, I was so shocked that I almost cried when I was too full to finish my burger.

Now I know to keep half of my food for later.

S's First Corset: How Corsets Improve Posture

In my self-intro post, I mentioned about a corset that I tried on, which led to me work for D' Corselet.

So here it is;

(Excuse my very-not-professionally-taken-selfie, I'm just not a photo person....)

This picture is of me wearing my first corset, F1410 Grey Denim Vest Corset, today. A great design that you can wear for casual outings or themed-events (Oktoberfest, Halloween, Wild Wild West.... just to name a few).

M and another friend of ours, E, gave this to me right after I returned from a short trip overseas, and believe me; I had no idea what it was back then, but when M put this magical garment on me, I was instantly IN LOVE! I had never seen myself standing so straight before, without any effort at all!

I used to have bad posture from constant slouching back in school days. As a result, backaches became an almost daily "visitor" even though I wasn't doing any exercise. However, after being introduced to corsets and working in this shop, I started wearing them almost daily and my posture has improved greatly! No more out-of-the-blue backaches!

If you have problems with your posture, or find that you are constantly having lower backaches while doing desk work or studying, I strongly recommend you to try using corsets to keep your back straight.

An important note is that during the first week of wearing a corset, you will feel backaches a few hours after you started wearing, and probably from different muscles than usual. This is as you are used to slouching; the left and right side of your muscles are not evenly developed/used. Therefore, with the corset keeping your body straight, your body will need to adapt to how your muscles are used, similar to exercising the weaker muscle, resulting in muscle soreness. This slowly strengthens the weaker muscles, and once both sides of your muscles are evenly trained, your posture will become naturally straight even without a corset. You will also have lesser backaches than you used to have, while studying or working too.

Note that this is simply based on my personal experience, and only for those with minor posture issues or backaches. By any chance if you have scoliosis or intense backaches, please seek professional/medical advice, before buying a corset, as our corsets are not medical corsets.

M: V-neck Dress

I love layering my clothes to create a look that is both comfortable and stylish. Singapore has a very hot climate, so coats and jackets are not a suitable option when dressing to suit the local weather.

Hence, my latest style obsession was a sleeveless V-neck dress/jumper/overalls. After quite a few months of looking, I found the perfect V-neck dress at HnM.

Everything about this dress was perfect; from the design and material, to the length and shape.

It even had pockets!

Sadly, my size was no longer in stock. [-.-;]
I wanted it so much I kept checking back for my size until it was finally taken off the shelves. *whine*

Heartbreak.. Until I found a similar dress in Indonesia!

What I love about this design is that the sides, front, and back, are open. This allows me to transform a normally loud top into a subtle inner layer, while still showcasing the key features of my corsets.
How many of us have avoided buying corsets without straps or sleeves because we felt they were too revealing/exposing? Not anymore! The thick straps add modesty by covering part of my back, chest, and shoulders. Great for those with broader shoulders and chests like me.

I love playing with colors. Because the red corset is now on the inside, it becomes more of an undertone feature of my outfit, rather than an overtly in-your-face red.

It even has a little bow at the middle! This dress has no front/back, so I can put the bow in front for corsets with plain trims.

I like how the lace-up back peeks through. Casual and playful. I may have found the perfect outfit for daytime dates. <3

S: They're generic but they are beautiful!

Just in case you're curious, yes, all the corsets we have in store are generic. We do not have a professional corset maker in our shop, but we always try our best to procure corsets with good quality and support

I know that there are people out there who might want to tear me apart for supporting generic corsets. I have had multiple experiences, where a person will just walk in, grab our corsets and shake them the way they probably do when they are angry at someone, looked at me dead in the eyes and say 'these are not real corsets!"

No joke. This actually happened quite a few times, and I'm still baffled every time I recalled what had happened.... I do understand that everyone can have their own opinion and everyone has the freedom to express them BUT definitely not in an aggressive way. I'm open to discuss about any issues you have in mind, but it's not called "discussing" when you're shouting at me and don't have the basic courtesy to wait until I finish my sentences

Honest saying, I do know that generic corsets are of different quality compared to custom made corsets. I have seen various custom made corsets before and can tell the differences. Generic corsets do not cinch in as much as custom made corsets do, as custom made corsets are specifically tailored to the user's ideal body measurements. So, yea, we appreciate it if you don't come and trample on us because of that anymore.

For me, there are beauties in generic corsets, and they have their purpose in the market. They serve as a more affordable alternative for beginners or for single fashion uses. There's also a difference in quality within generic corsets. A good generic corset can cinch in the waist to create a smoother and slimmer silhouette, whilst providing sufficient support for lifting up the bust and keeping a straight posture with minimal to no discomfort as long as they are properly adjusted.

So if you are the kind who thinks that only your kind of corset is the “real” corset, and the only reason for you to visit us is to roast us, kindly do not be offended when we ask you to leave our vicinity. Aside from that, you are most welcome to visit us.

M: Miss Potato Singapore

I have been wearing corsets on a semi-regular basis these past 2 years.

The feeling of wearing a corset is very addictive. The moment you tighten it around your torso, your back automatically reverts to its naturally straight posture. It's like my couch potato slouching habit has magically transformed into Miss Pageant poses.

Here's an example of a potato in a corset. Our very first, unofficial logo. You can still see it in our facebook page's profile pictures.

My corsets make me feel like Miss Potato Singapore, instead of a regular potato.

Good corsets pull in the waist and tummy, creating an hourglass figure. I wear my corsets both on the outside and inside my clothes. Sometimes because the designs are really cool. Sometimes because i want to have a more attractive silhouette.

Like all rookies, I made the mistake of over-tightening and force bending my corsets. I was adamant on pulling my waist as much as I could, while ignoring the fact that my body was not used to wearing a corset yet.

The result? Bruises on one side, and back aches in a certain spot.

Why only on one side? Because I tend to drop things on my left.

I realized that I kept force-bending the corset against the bones. Lazy potato me could not be bothered to get off my chair and pick up things that fell off the table. So I simply held my breath and bent over on the same side repeatedly.

The back aches were also a result of over-tightening. My body was not used to wearing a corset, but I kept trying to force it into a certain shape intensively instead of gradually.

My corsets also began to tear at the seams on the same spots. That's when I realised I was mistreating my corsets, and myself.

Then I decided to loosen my corsets. Instead of pulling in as much as I could, I started lacing my corsets to fit my body shape, then pull in a few extra inchs. Viola! Instant improvement in my back health and comfort level.

The corsets still gave me an hourglass figure, albeit not as drastic as before. With time, my body adapted to the corsets, and my waist line significantly retained a corseted shape.

Now, after 2 years of semi-regular corseting (~3x/week), I can reduce my waist from 32" to 26" at its maximum, without discomfort. However, 28" to 29" is most comfortable for me, especially for full day (12 - 16 hours) wear.

In the past 2 months, I put on ~5kg due to stress and lack of exercise, but even then, with a comfortably fitted corset, my body proportions are; 37", 30.5", 41". That's a 1.58m, 65kg potato with a 0.74 waist-to-hips ratio.

I am a sexy potato. Maybe I shall be Miss Potato Singapore.

Intro: Staff S

Hey everyone! S here! Crazy crazy Halloween we've had and hope everyone had a great time too!

A little bit of delay, but here's my intro!

I started working for D' Corselet at the same time as M (roughly 2 1/2 years ago). Unlike M, I didn't have much encounter with corsets aside from movies or novels, but it was an interesting experience when I first tried on a corset (I'll share with you guys more on this topic in my future entry), after which I was presented with the opportunity to work here by M.

It wasn't easy when we first started. I knew nuts about corsets, and M and I weren't given much training before we were left to handle everything on our own. Good thing we have Google to the rescue! So here's a
special thanks to all corset-lovers out there for sharing their knowledge and passion with all us beginners online. We really do appreciate all the help!

If you ever tried, you'll know finding a corset in Singapore is definitely not an easy task. You can find some in lingerie, costume or sex shops but with very limited choices. The most common feedback we heard are they don't come in sizes, the corsets don't cinch the waist in the way they like it, and there wasn't enough push-up....

Our shop's motto is to help people find the right corset for their occasions and needs! So girls, guys, everyone! If you need a corset come visit me and M at D' Corselet, Far East Plaza!

At any time, we carry more than 100 different styles and designs, with sizes up to 6XL, plus the right amount of support and shaping effect!
We are more than happy to assist you in choosing the right designs to fit your purpose, and the most important is you can try them on!

If you have any queries about our corsets, feel free to comment!

Intro: Staff M

Hello everybody! I am Staff M. (Wow, sounds like a movie tagline. lol!)

For privacy purposes, we will not be revealing our real names here, but if you come down to say Hi to us in the shop, you can always ask us. :)

Before working here, I was the occasional customer, and bought a few selected pieces overseas. During my time strapping people in, I fell totally and utterly in love with D' Corselet's corsets.

Although ready-made, the shape and suitability for most bodies had me convinced that I found my calling. My collection is currently at 30+ corsets and counting! (I even have a separate mini-cupboard for my corsets {^v^}V  )

I started working at D' Corselet Pte Ltd about 2 and a half years ago, starting at the same time as S. There was a change in management after the older staff left, leaving us greenhorns all on our own, with no guidance or seniors to consult.

Since then, we have learnt a lot through interacting with the regular customers and playing around with the mountains of corsets entrusted to us. Mr Google has also been a great help in connecting us with master corsetiers from all over the globe.

In this blog, we will be addressing frequently asked questions such as "What is the difference between steel bone and soft bone?", "What is waist-training?", "Is it comfortable to go clubbing in my corset?" and so on. From the most technical questions like "What difference does the lacing position of my corset make", to the silliest "How do I use the toilet in my corset?", we will try our best to answer them, so feel free to comment under our posts!

Staff S will be making her introductory post soon, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, here are a few photos of some corsets I own. ;) +1 complimentary boob photo. Because some corsets give you amazing cleavage.
